The underclass of Chalakanesia. Live in a slum in Westport. Originally came from Heaven or Hell.
The timber merchant was accompanied by a muscleman, one of the Gan, who was carrying a log of cedar. This could be read in various ways. Gorkindachina was certainly making a statement about his income: my money comes from timber, and you all know it, and the timber trade is an honest trade. He might also be making a statement about employment: I give good work to hundreds. But perhaps he was also daring to make a direct appeal for the votes of the Gan, Chalakanesia's traditional underclass.
'I always thought,' said Atlanta, 'that it was a mistake for us to give votes to the Gan.' [EoH Ch10]
