Holes in an adaptive skin

There is no way to get inside an adaptive skin without a struggle. The tubular creature at first resists the body's entrance. Even when it relaxes, one must still struggle, forcing oneself into its elastic musculature.
At last, Atlanta's torso was encased in the tube of living leather. Dug Mantis helped adjust it, making sure her gill-slits were aligned with the vetavetch, the tailored holes cut in the adaptive skin to leave a sealine swimmer's gills free to function.
'Looks good,' said Dug Mantis. 'Now hold tight!' [WoH Ch16]
